"You can't get by way of a single day without having an impact on the world round you. What you do makes a distinction, and it's important to determine what kind of distinction you need to make."

- Jane Goodall

In search of an environmentally friendly idea to faucet into? Here's one: ditch the plastic water bottles and begin getting your aqua at home.

An estimated 88% of plastic water bottles are NOT recycled in Canada - a number that is as embarrassing as it's staggering.

With every Canadian consuming 60 litres of bottled water a year - and gross sales surpassing coffee, tea, and milk - this is loads of plastic needlessly piling up in landfills.

In North America, it was once that about 70 million plastic water bottles ended up in landfills each year.

At present, within the US alone, Americans use an estimated 50 BILLION plastic water bottles in a yr - and 40 billion of these ended up wrote kliuk president in a blog post landfills.

Holy batman... that is a LOT of plastic water bottles!

Throughout the globe, close to 2.5 billion kilograms of plastic are used to bottle water each year. And this plastic can take as long as 1,000 years to biodegrade. Within the process, toxic additives are leaching into the groundwater.

As for the quantity of oil required to supply mentioned plastic? It takes 17 million barrels of oil every year to make water bottles for the US market. That's the equal of fueling 1 million cars for a year.

However wait, there's more...
Footprint goes past the plastic

Unlike the water you get by way of your tap at house, bottled water has an even bigger environmental footprint because it must be transported over lengthy distances. Instead of simply being piped into your glass in the kitchen, it arrives by truck, train, airplane, and boat. And all these modes of transport require fossil fuels to get around.

And many bottled water manufacturers truly use filtered tap water similar to the water you get at house anyway. Plus, residential tap water is often more strictly tested and regulated than bottled water, so it makes little sense to purchase something that is so plentiful and low-cost at home.

Think of the cash you may save

"Buying water in plastic bottles just does not make sense financially," explains the Pays to Live Green website. "It may cost you as a lot as 2400 instances as much to get your water in a one-time use bottle versus getting it from the tap. The typical bottle of water will value you on common of $.79 compared to just 1/3 of a cent from your faucet."

Here's what you can do to minimize the impact of plastic water bottles:

1. Stop buying bottled water - or maybe start by buying less

2. Recycle any disposable plastic water bottles you do use - versus throwing them within the garbage

3. Buy a reusable water bottle and use it at work, on the road, in the gym, etc.

Taking these steps will assist to maintain more water the place it needs to be - outside of a bottle. It is going to lower down on pointless waste in landfills by reducing a few of the tens of millions of plastic water bottles dumped daily.

So let's ease up on automatically hitting the bottle and search for what's on faucet instead.

Personally, I'm a HUGE water drinker. I drink at least 2 litres of water a day. So you'll rarely see me out and about with considered one of my trusty Nalgene water bottles in tow. But on occasion, if I neglect my water bottle or I run out of water (and there's no place to refill it) then I will purchase a disposable bottle of water. But I certain don't love to.
